When regular maintenance and inspection fails to be done on your engine, the chances increase that your vehicle will not operate as reliably or efficiently as it once did. A well-tuned engine works at maximum performance levels, and during an engine tune up, the parts that often affect performance will be checked and replaced.
Spark plugs are what create an electrical spark that helps to ignite the gas and air mixture in an engine. They create and have to be able to withstand a tremendous amount of heat and voltage. So, if your spark plugs are not working as they should, then your engine can stall and may not start.
Fuel and air filters are more items that will be checked during a tune-up. These two also affect engine performance and gas usage. Fuel filters are there to help protect your engine’s fuel system. They effectively trap dirt and other debris often found in fuel and do not allow them to get access to your engine. Over time, a fuel filter, however, does clog, and will not allow fuel to flow as freely as it once did. This can result in poor acceleration and engine performance.
Engines require a free flow of clean air to operate correctly. Exterior air travels through an air filter and mixes with your fuel to power the engine. Air filters will effectively trap the dirt and other debris. As with the aforementioned fuel filters, air filters also clog over time.
A dirty air filter can mean you lose up to 20 horsepower while making your engine work overtime, as it restricts the airflow. A dirty air filter will reduce your gas usage also. Your engine must have the right amount of air and fuel; however, decreased air flow means there is less air mixing with your fuel; ergo, your engine will use more fuel to compensate for this.
